THE BAND

Matthew Gold

Born in Queens, New York, Matt Gold began playing guitar at age 9. He has since performed in venues around the world including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, The Mozarteum in Salzberg, The Bear Creek Music and Arts Festival, and numerous others. Matt has also appeared on television and radio, with appearances on NBC, FOX, and NPR's Around Noon with Dee Perry. A simple twist of fate brought Matt to Oberlin College and Conservatory where he is currently pursuing degrees in jazz guitar and history. He has shared the stage with great artists such as Dave Liebman, Jamey Haddad, Nicholas Payton, J-Live, and Underground System. In addition to guitar, Matt frequently performs on electric bass, drum set, and steel pan. He also enjoys fresh air and stepping on crunchy leaves.

Matthew Adomeit

Matt Adomeit began picking away at the mandolin at age 10, playing along with the cassette tapes he found in his house in Hartford, Connecticut. His formal study of music would not begin until years later, when he grew to love the upright bass and the versatility it afforded him. The bass allowed Matt the opportunity to draw from his early folk experiences on the mandolin and also broadened his musical scope to include both jazz and classical. This eclecticism has since defined his musical personality.

Not content to remain within the boundaries of his Jazz Performance Major at Oberlin, he auditioned for and was admitted into the Oberlin Orchestra, which toured Carnegie Hall in New York in the winter of 2013. He has performed at similarly prestigious concert halls such as the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and Severance Hall in Cleveland. Matt has shared the stage with numerous top jazz artists including Jamey Haddad, Dave Liebman, Paul Samuels, and Alon Yavnai, and performed in venues throughout the Midwest including Nighttown (Cleveland), Close Up 2 (Chicago), and the Dirty Dog Café (Detroit).

Through composition, Matt has seen yet another chance to meld his disparate interests. He has composed for a wide variety of his own bands including the Hip-Hop/Gospel/Rock band Knomadik and the sextet deturtle, which combines a jazz trio with a classical string trio. deturtle was recently featured on NPR playing one of his compositions. If he’s not at his bass or composing Matt can be found playing with dogs, eating chocolate, or still strumming away at the mandolin. Matt will be completing a BM and BA in performance and economics as part of Oberlin’s double-degree program in the spring of 2013.

Nathan Friedman

Nate Friedman is a drummer and percussionist from Washington, DC. He is majoring in Economics and Jazz Percussion Performance at Oberlin College, where he studies with renowned drummer Billy Hart, as well as with Jamey Haddad and Paul Samuels. He has been fortunate enough to share the stage with artists including Dave Liebman, Rufus Reid, Jamey Haddad, Leo Blanco, and Alon Yavnai.

Myra Hinrichs

Myra Hinrichs, violinist, is a student at the Oberlin College and Conservatory studying with Gregory Fulkerson. Myra began playing the violin at age 6 with Jung-Kyu Min in Saint Paul, MN. In high school she attended the Aspen Music Festival for two years, studying with Naoko Tanaka, and returned again in 2011. In 2010, she attended the National Orchestral Institute and the Mimir Chamber Music Festival. This past summer Myra was a member of the National Repertory Orchestra. At Oberlin, she has performed in the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble and as principal second violin of the Oberlin Orchestra and the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra including performances on the Oberlin Orchestra's recent New York tour. She is a member of Chartreuse, an ensemble devoted to performing contemporary music, which recently toured Norway as the recipient of a Creativity and Leadership grant from Oberlin College. In addition to performing, she maintains a small private studio in Oberlin. When she isn't playing, you can usually find her dancing while baking chocolatey things.

Carrie Frey

Carrie studies viola at Oberlin Conservatory with Peter Slowik. She began playing violin at the age of three; before that, she was frequently seen scraping by with a small instrument made of a margarine box and a ruler.  She took up the viola in 2008 with the help and inspiration of Katie Dey at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities. Carrie has performed at festivals and venues around the world, from Washington, DC and Aspen, CO to Tokyo and Sapporo, Japan.  Her trio, Chartreuse, recently toured Norway with support from an Oberlin Conservatory Creativity and Leadership grant. She has also toured with Bonne Action, an Oberlin-based new music ensemble, performing in Oberlin; Buffalo, NY; and Greenville, SC. At Oberlin she has appeared with the Contemporary Music Ensemble, as principal of Oberlin Orchestra, and of course with deturtle. Her repertoire in the last three years has included over 50 student compositions and multiple premieres by faculty members Lewis Nielson, Daniel Tacke, and Peter Swendsen. Upcoming premieres include works by Peter Kramer, Devin Frenze, and Matthew Chamberlain. In addition to performing, Carrie enjoys teaching violin and viola to a small number of students from the Oberlin area.  When not playing viola, Carrie enjoys experimenting with vegan muffin flavors and drinking tea and coffee indiscriminately.
